You remember “Space Jam” with Michael Jordan don’t you? In short, Jordan, with the help of Warner Bros cartoon characters such as Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck, defeat a team of aliens in a basketball game.
It was really popular with the kids at the time exactly 20 years ago in 1996. Adults may forget that it was a big box office hit, grossing over $230 million worldwide ($351 million in today’s dollars). And since then, there have been endless rumors of a sequel. They are no longer rumors, as a sequel is definitely happening.
Of course the problem with doing a sequel to “Space Jam” is finding a basketball player or any current athlete with the appeal, the allure and the charisma of a Michael Jordan. And Warner Bros think they have found their answer in LeBron James, who is definitely popular – a superstar athlete with a global brand, who continues to add to his film and TV slate, building his production company SpringHill Entertainment.
This “Space Jam” sequel will fall under his deal with Warner Bros studios via SpringHill.
Justin Lin, nest known for a “Fast & Furious” franchise of movies he directed, as well as director of the most recent “Star Trek” film, “Star Trek Beyond”, is set to direct “Space Jame 2.”
No ETA on when the film can be expected, or any other casting and crew announcements.
