To recap… S&A is giving away 2 tickets to a performance of the Broadway revival of Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire, directed by Emily Mann.
Previews began about 2 weeks ago, and having talked to a few people who've attended those early previews, reactions have been mostly positive on it; some concerns, but primarily kinks that should be worked out before the show's official opening this Sunday, April 22.
And now 1 lucky winner (and a guest) will be able to experience the production in person, with a starring cast that includes Blair Underwood as Stanley, Nicole Ari Parker as Blanche, Daphne Rubin-Vega as Stella, and Wood Harris as Mitch.
The tickets you were competing for are for the Sunday, April 29, 3PM performance.
The seats are in the higher up rows in the center Orchestra section.
What did you have to do to win the 2 tickets?
Easy enough; just answer this one question: Of all the black actors who have won Tony Awards for their performances on stage (hence, not for work done off stage, like producers; and also not "honorary") name those who have also won Academy Awards for their performances on film (again, for their performances in front of the camera, and also, non "honorary").
You were to submit your answers to obensont@gmail.com and had until Wednesday, the 25th of April, at 11:59PM EST, to do so.
And without further ado, the answer to the trivia question is… Denzel Washington! He's the only actor so far who fits the aboe criteria. I received guesses that were all over the place which means that some of you folks didn't even bother to look up your answers! But I won't shame you in public. You know who you are 🙂
Some didn't read the question closely enough, and included people who'd won honorary awards, or who as producers, like Whoopi Goldberg (won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, but won a Tony for producing, not acting); and James Earl Jones (won a Tony for acting, but won an Honorary Oscar).
But most of you got the answer right.
And the winner (Alison McNeil) has already been emailed; so if you haven't received an email from me, you know that you didn't win. Sorry; there's always a next time!
I'll be seeing the play myself very soon, and will share my thoughts on it afterward.
Streetcar, produced by Stephen Byrd, occupies the Broadhurst Theater on 44th Street, and features an original jazz score composed by Terence Blanchard.
