Knowing who to vote for in a local election can be one of the hardest decisions you make every election cycle. We all watch the polarizing Presidential race, but local officials impact our day-to-day on a much larger scale. The race for the State’s Attorney has never been more crucial in larger urban cities. With the recent police shooting of LaQuan McDonald, electing the State’s Attorney for Cook County will be a huge deal. Chicago I encourage you to pay attention and learn more about this race.

Chicago Votes is an organization dedicated to promoting voter turnout and providing information about candidates. They have created a Voter’s Guide to electing the next State’s Attorney. Why is this position so important?

“A State’s Attorney can hold police accountable for their actions and recommend sentencing lengths.”

Local elections will not get the same coverage as federal elections, but their importance might be of a higher caliber. We must elect officials that act in the best interests of the community, not in the best interests of the police, the wealthy, or other personal agendas. Our officials have to be people who understand the everyday obstacles we face in our own neighborhoods, and want to create an environment of safety and transparency.
