11 Black Female Country Artists to Stream

Though Black Americans’ influence was crucial to the conception of country music, they have historically been erased from the genre. That stands true for Black female country artists of the past and present.

Many of these entertainers only received their flowers later in their lives/careers. Here are some Black female country singers that paved the way for the genre or are making new waves today to celebrate.  

Elizabeth Cotten (1893–1987)

Cotten was a pioneering guitarist and folk-blues musician who developed a unique fingerpicking style, known as “Cotten picking.” Her work laid the groundwork for many country artists. 

Etta Baker (1913–2006)

Etta Baker is another important figure in the Piedmont blues and Appalachian traditions. Her intricate two-finger picking influenced folk, blues and country musicians alike.

Linda Martell (b. 1941)

Martell had a breakthrough in the late 1960s and early '70s. Color Me Country made history and she became the first Black woman to perform at the Grand Ole Opry.

Tracy Chapman (b. 1964)

Chapman is a folk singer whose blues-country influences have had an undeniable impact. In 2023, she became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year.

Miko Marks (b. 1973)

Marks, a tenured country artist blending traditional and contemporary, had a resurgence with hit albums like Our Country (2021) and Feel Like Going Home (2022).

Rissi Palmer (b. 1981)

Palmer made history on the country charts with her 2007 song "Country Girl." Her Color Me Country radio show supports other Black artists.

Mickey Guyton (b. 1983)

Guyton has been breaking barriers with songs like "Black Like Me." Her album Remember Her Name was nominated for a Grammy, making history for Black women in country.

Brittney Spencer (b. 1988)

The singer-songwriter "blew up" after her viral cover of "Crowded Table." Spencer has since been championed by major artists and released her album My Stupid Life in 2024.

Tanner Adell (b. 1996)

Adell is a rising star blending country music with pop and hip-hop influences. Her viral hits like "Buckle Bunny" have gained traction, making her a fresh new face in the genre.

Reyna Roberts (b. 1997)

Known for her powerhouse vocals and high-energy performances, Roberts has dropped hits like "Raised Right" and "Stompin’ Grounds," merging rock and country.

Tiera Kennedy (b. 1998)

A fresh voice in country music, Kennedy blends traditional country with R&B. Songs like "Found It In You" show off her smooth vocals and heartfelt storytelling.
