The animated Spider-Man Spider-Verse franchise, which currently consists of Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse, has been a huge critical and financial success.
The box office returns for the two entries were $384.3 million and $690 million respectively, further contributing to Spider-Man’s status as Marvel’s most bankable film character.
This level of success should have made it safe to assume the further adventures of Miles Morales would soon be released.
The new chapter was set to hit theaters in late Summer 2024. It's since been rescheduled to 2025 and more recently 2027, or “…when it’s ready.”
Sony, the studio that primarily owns the film rights to the Spider-Man character, has cited undisclosed creative differences as the reason for delay.
There are also internal reports that animators were exhausted from the relatively quick release schedule between Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse.
While the fervent fan base of the Spider-Verse franchise is disappointed, they’re also encouraged that the third film will meet their high expectations.
Both Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse are streaming on Disney+. The latter is also currently on Netflix.
Any Marvel fan who missed out should treat themselves to a binge. It's an enjoyable afternoon commitment, with a runtime totaling around two and a half hours.
Those still dismayed by the delayed release of Beyond the Spider-Verse can be assuaged by the announced 2026 drop of Spider-Man 4 starring Zendaya and Tom Holland.
