Celebrating Lent in 2025

By keely aouga

Every year, subgroups of Christianity around the world observe Lent leading up to Easter.

This period is meant for Christians to reflect on their faith and practice repentance.

Lent is a 40-day season of prayer and fasting. The duration of Lent is based on the 40 days that Jesus spent fasting and praying in the desert, according to the Bible.

This year, Lent began on Mar. 5. It ends with Holy Thursday celebrations on Apr. 17.

Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent. Those participating receive an ash marking on their forehead in the shape of a cross.

This tradition has its roots in the Old Testament, where wearing ashes was a common sign of repentance for sins, and a sign of one’s humility before God.

Lent is different every year because it is directly tied to the date of Easter, which changes annually based on the lunar cycle.

Easter always falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox.

Palm Sunday

Palm Sunday is the Sunday before Easter. It marks the start of Holy Week, which is greatly important for Christians. This year, Palm Sunday falls on Apr. 13.

Holy Thursday

The end of Lent is marked by Holy Thursday, the last Thursday before Easter. This year, it falls on Apr. 17.

Next year, Lent is expected to commence on Feb. 18.
