While visiting one’s former high school isn’t exactly at the top of many people’s to-do lists, Will Smith recently made it a point to pop in and surprise students at his alma mater: Overbrook High School.

The School District of Philadelphia announced the King Richard actor’s surprise visit on Thursday through an Instagram video, captioned, “What an amazing surprise! Today, @willsmith made a surprise visit back to Overbrook High School.”

As he walks through the institution’s hallways, Smith can be heard remarking “Wow” multiple times.

Shortly thereafter, he walks into a classroom of awaiting students, who are thrilled to have Smith in their presence.

Further information about Smith’s visit came through the school district’s Facebook page.

“Digital Media students at Overbrook High got quite a surprise today when Philly native and Overbrook alum Will Smith visited their class! Thanks for everything Will,” a Facebook post reads.

In addition to these uploads, Tony B. Watlington Sr. — superintendent of the school district — shared a few photos of Smith’s Overbrook High School visit on Twitter.

Social media users swiftly began reacting to Smith’s visit, and many were thrilled to see it.

“I was a teacher at Bluford elementary, right down the street from Overbrook, and we were so proud to be affiliated with Will Smith in even the most incremental way. I’m so glad he continues to recognize and honor the community which gave him his foundation,” one Facebook user commented.

“That was so awesome! He wasn’t too ‘Hollywood’ to give hugs handshakes take pictures. This makes us (Philly) proud,” someone penned on Instagram.

“Wow! That’s awesome! They are lucky to have Will Smith come to their school. He is a icon without a doubt,” another person wrote.

However, not everyone welcomed the surprise with open arms and took the opportunity to bring up the infamous “slapgate” incident that went down at the 2022 Academy Awards.

“No slaps?” one user succinctly asked on Instagram.

“Glad to see he’s doing his community service! Only 9,959 more hours to log,” a Twitter user joked.

“You know he is messed up. He hasn’t even been close to a Philly public school since he left lol its a shame he couldn’t bother before he smacked a man on national tv,” another person wrote on Facebook.

Despite the mixed reactions, it appears as though the majority of the community was pleased with the actor’s visit.

Shoutout to Will Smith for dropping by to essentially pay homage to his former high school!
