Last night, director Yoruba Richen (Promised Land) was honored with the Creative Promise Award at Tribeca All Access for her explosive new documentary, The New Black.

Produced by Yvonne Welbon (Sisters in Cinema) and Angela Tucker (Black Folk Don't, (A)sexual), The New Black explores "the complicated histories of the African American and LGBT civil rights movements."

We last posted about the film back in January when it was selected from nearly 700 submissions for the Tribeca All Access program, which offers filmmakers resources and relationships with industry professionals.

The Creative Promise Awards offer cash prizes of $10,000 each, and are determined by a jury of film professionals.

The New Black is planned for release in 2013. You can follow the film's progress at its Facebook page.

Congratulations ladies!
