Perhaps taking her cues from Jay-Z and Will Smith (or perhaps not) songstress Alicia Keys will put on her producers hat to bring writer Lydia R. Diamond’s play Stick Fly to the Broadway stage.

Keys will share producing duties with long-time Tyler Perry producer, Reuben Cannon, with Kenny Leon, who directed Denzel Washington and Viola Davis to Tony awards in last year’s revival of August Wilson’s Fences, directing.

Stick Flychronicles the interactions and revelations within a well-to-do black family at its home in Martha’s Vineyard.

I’m familiar with the play (my girlfriend, an actress, has a copy of it), but I haven’t read it yet, so I can’t really say anything about it. However, this gives me some motivation to finally read it.

It’s traveled a bit, running in a number of cities, attracting critical acclaim along the way; however, this will be its Broadway debut.

No casting has been announced yet; also, no word on whether Alicia plans to act in the play as well. But with Kenny Leon directing (he’s also helming Katori Hall’s The Mountaintop, which will star Samuel L. Jackson and Angela Bassett, later this fall), you can bet he’ll be going to after “names” to fill his Stick Fly cast.

Stay tuned…
