Anna Maria Horsford (an actress who's worked consistently since the late 1970s, in both film and on TV) is joining the cast of the Fox Comedy, New Girl, playing the mother of Lamorne Morris's character, Winston Bishop.

As Winston’s tough mother, Charmaine Bishop – a Chicagoan who raised all of her children to become professional basketball players – Horsford will be the second black actress to be cast in the series, following last week's news that Niecy Nash, co-star of TV Land's The Soul Man, had joined the series, playing a thieving hooker.

Zoey Deschanel stars in New Girl as an offbeat young woman, who moves into an apartment loft with three single men, after a break-up; Lamorne Morris is one of the 3 single men.

New Girl returns to Fox at 8/7c and 9/8c on Tuesday, September 25.
