It’s been a while, actually since the beginning of this
year, when we last heard any news about filmmaker Chinonye Chukwu and her first feature film alaskaLand, but now we
have some exciting news.

Back in March, Tambay announced that New World Distribution had picked up the film for release, though
there were no details at the time in regards to their plans.

Now Ms. Chukwu has announced that New World Distribution
and Indie Rights Movie, in the next few weeks, will release alaskaLand on iTunes, iPad, iPhone and Apple TV.

Shortly after that, the film will expand to over two dozen online, mobile and On Demand platforms,
including: Comcast, Amazon, Google Play,
Cable One and Time Warner.

And on top of that, the film will also begin broadcasting
on over two dozen television stations around the world, though details regarding
that will be coming shortly.

The film which was shown at the Chicago,
Montreal, Trenton and Martha’s Vineyard
film festivals was inspired by the filmmaker’s actual experiences, having being
a Nigerian raised in Alaska, who describes herself as an “anomaly” of
sorts.

A winner of the prestigious Princess Grace Award, she strives “to make films that are at the
forefront of change.” As she has said herself that “it would be too cliché, and
maybe even ambitious, for me to say that I want to change the world, but this
is, in fact, the vision I had when I created Where’s the Fire? Filmworks.“

As for what the film is about, it tells the story of “Chukwuma,
an Alaskan-raised Nigerian struggling to balance the expectations of his
traditional Nigerian parents and the larger world around him. After his parents
are killed in a tragic car crash, Chukwuma is separated from his younger
sister, Chidinma, who moves to Nigeria with their Uncle until she becomes of
legal age. After
two years the siblings reconnect to find their estrangement has created new
personal and cultural frictions in ways that bring them closer to each other
and their roots, as well as help them define what it means to be a Nigerian in
Alaska.”
