The advice “You never know until you try” has never rung truer than when you hear how Anthony Mackie landed his role as the Falcon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In a recent interview with Men’s Health, Mackie said that he got his job with Marvel by simply emailing them.

“My line was, ‘Yo, I’m the Black dude from The Hurt Locker. I would love to work with you guys,'” he said.

In the article, Mackie says he wanted any role they had. His original audition with Marvel was for Iron Man 3‘s Mandarin. Thankfully, though, he was able to land the role of Sam Wilson, aka Falcon, who is now the next Captain America in the MCU.

“Growing up, I’d always loved Falcon, because he was a comic-book hero who was Black who didn’t have ‘Black’ in the title,” he said. “He stood on his morals. He stood on who he was.”
