Some key exiting “Hamilton” cast are all moving on the screen work for their next projects – Lin-Manuel Miranda is set to co-star in the “Mary Poppins” film sequel, “Mary Poppins Returns,” directed by Rob Marshall; Renee Elise Goldsberry will leap into the future for a leading role in Netflix’s upcoming sci-fi drama “Altered Carbon;” and now Daveed Diggs has booked his first film role in Lionsgate’s drama “Wonder.”

Directed by Stephen Chbosky, “Wonder” is an adaptation of author R. J. Palacio’s children’s book of the same name, which Jacob Tremblay and Julia Roberts are also attached to star in.

The story follows August Pullman, born with a facial deformity that, up until now, has prevented him from going to a mainstream school. Starting 5th grade at Beecher Prep, he wants nothing more than to be treated as an ordinary kid – but his new classmates can’t get past his extraordinary face. Told initially from August’s point of view, the story’s POV soon switches to include his classmates, his sister, her boyfriend, and others. These perspectives converge in a portrait of one community’s struggle with empathy, compassion, and acceptance, as August struggles to prove to everyone else that he’s no different from them.

Published in 2012, “Wonder” is a New York Times bestseller, and included on the Texas Bluebonnet Award master list, with critics lauding it as one of the best kids’ books of the year it was published.”

Daveed Diggs has signed up to play Mr. Browne, an English teacher at the school with an unconventional approach to teaching literature. A “companion” book to “Wonder” was actually published 2 years later, focusing on Mr Browne, titled “365 Days of Wonder: Mr. Browne’s Book of Precepts.” The “companion” book features Mr. Browne’s essays and conversations between he had with August Pullman, and other students of his, giving readers a special peek at their lives after “Wonder” ends.

The film adaptation of “Wonder” is set to go into production this year. Chbosky directs from a script by Steve Conrad.

Diggs will also be seen in HBO’s upcoming sports mockumentary “Tour De Pharmacy,” starring Andy Samberg. Diggs will play a black Canadian cyclist named Young Slim Klingston. The actor will also appear in multiple episodes of ABC’s Black-ish next season.
