With the upcoming releases of The Oval and Sistas, as well as the historic opening of his new studio in Atlanta, Georgia, Tyler Perry has more than sowed the seeds of a lasting legacy in the realm of film and television.

The historic opening of Tyler Perry studios made the multitalented entertainer the first African-American to own a film studio. The opening of the 330-acre studio drew the likes of Whoopi Goldberg, Beyoncé, Sunny Hostin, Colin Kaepernick, Cicely Tyson and Halle Berry. However, prior to its official opening, the studio lot also drew the interest of those behind Black Panther.

Long before two of Perry’s upcoming series, Sistas and The Oval, filmed at Tyler Perry Studios, parts of Black Panther were filmed there. In fact, the Marvel film and Best Picture Oscar nominee was the first production to be filmed there. The studio had been operating for the last few years, with the Marvel project and series like The Walking Dead having production there.

According to the AJC, many metro Atlanta locations were used for filming, including the High Museum in Midtown Atlanta and Vulcan Materials Co.’s rock quarry in Stockbridge.

The shoot, which started in August 2016 and ended in November 2017, employed over 3,000 Georgia residents.
