Announced about a year ago, Forest Whitaker’s Broadway debut has finally arrived, with performances beginning tonight, February 8, 2016!

The revival of “Hughie,” a play by Eugene O’Neill, is set at night, in a New York City hotel, in 1928, and centers on a hustler named Erie Smith, who confides in a night clerk through the early hours of the next morning, as he shares his trials and triumphs in chasing the so-called American Dream.

Tony Award winner Frank Wood co-stars in the production, opposite Whitaker, which is being housed at the Booth Theatre, with performances kicking off tonight, and an official opening on February 25 for a limited engagement. 

O’Neil wrote the play in the 1940s, and it was first staged on Broadway in 1964, starring Jason Robards.

There was a 1975 revival that starred Ben Gazzara, followed by another revival, in 1996, starring Al Pacino.

This year’s revival is directed by Michael Grandage, former artistic director of the Donmar Warehouse in London, who won a 2010 Tony Award for his direction of “Red.” 

“Hughie” is produced by Darren Bagert along with the Michael Grandage Company and the Shubert Organization. Adam Zotovich, Joan Raffe & Jhett Tolentino, Arielle Tepper Madover, Martin McCallum, Debbie Bisno, CJ E&M, Jeffrey Finn, Hagemann Rosenthal Associates, Stacey Mindich, Seaview Productions, Taylor Weinstein Theatricals, and Michael Watt are also now listed as producers.
