We’re 2 days away from the beginning of another month (January), and the beginning of an entirely new year (2017) – a time when Netflix typically reveals its regular streaming library edits (new titles added, old titles leaving). So if any of the below listed movies and/or TV series coming to and/or leaving the SVOD platform are of interest to you, make note of them now.

Of note is the recent feature documentary “Miss Sharon Jones!” on singer Sharon Jones who passed away a month ago after a lengthy battle with cancer.

For twenty years, soul singer Sharon Jones cultivated a world-wide audience with her sensational albums, performances and stunning voice. Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings have been heard in everything from FitBit commercials, to Martin Scorsese’s “The Wolf Of Wall Street” soundtrack. Though her career took off later in life, it’s clear that Ms. Jones always belonged onstage. At the height of her career in 2013, Ms. Jones was soaring, until a devastating cancer diagnosis forced her to pause. During one of the toughest years of her life, Academy Award winning filmmaker Barbara Kopple followed Ms. Jones and The Dap-Kings in the stunning and captivating “Miss Sharon Jones!”.

That year, it was announced that Jones had been diagnosed with bile duct cancer and underwent surgery, which forced her to postpone the release of the group’s fifth album, “Give the People What They Want.” The diagnosis was later changed to stage II pancreatic cancer, for which Jones had surgery on her liver and underwent chemotherapy. The chemotherapy caused hair loss, and for a time she performed bald, refusing to wear wigs. During the screening of the documentary at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, Jones revealed that her cancer had returned, and that she would be undergoing chemotherapy again.

Jones died last Friday, November 18, 2016 in Cooperstown, New York of complications from pancreatic cancer, aged 60.

The documentary on her remarkable career was released over the summer.

Also of note coming to Netflix next month, Tunisia’s submission for 2017 Best Foreign Language Film Oscar consideration (although it didn’t make the semi-final cut), director Leyla Bouzid’s critically-acclaimed drama “As I Open My Eyes,” which was released in the USA by Kino for a very limited theatrical run in September.

The Tunisian filmmaker’s impressive debut feature film is set in the summer of 2010, on the eve of Tunisia’s Jasmine Revolution, and follows Farah, a rebellious 18-year-old. Her over-protective mother wants her to study medicine, but fearless Farah prefers to sing with an underground band. When the police are alerted to the band’s subversive performances, and begin to harass them, Farah is detained and interrogated, and she begins to realize that one of her friends is a snitch.

Baya Medhaffer and Ghalia Benali star in the film.

Inspired by the filmmaker’s personal experience, reactions to the film after its early film festival screenings were stellar. Toronto (TIFF) called it a “remarkably accomplished first film,” directed “with unflagging honesty and an impeccable eye for detail,” adding that “Bouzid’s behind-the-camera talent is complemented by Iraqi musician Khyam Allami’s compositions and Ghassen Amami’s hard-hitting lyrics, and by the engaging, truthful performances of the cast – particularly Medhaffer, a joy to watch on stage as the fiery Farah, sharing a marvelous onscreen chemistry with celebrated singer-performer Benali.”

“As I Open My Eyes” will become available to stream on Netflix on January 10.
