Last month, news broke that the neo-noir crime film, New Jack City, was getting the remake treatment.

The original 1991 film was Mario Van Peebles’ directorial debut, and he starred in it with Wesley Snipes, Ice-T, Chris Rock, Flavor Flav, Allen Payne and others. The film followed Nino Brown (Snipes), a New York City drug lord, and detective, Scotty Appleton (Ice-T), who goes undercover to infiltrate the group. Although Deadline broke the news that the upcoming film is a reboot, the project’s writer, Malcolm M. Mays has called it a “sequel.”

While sitting down with Shadow And Act’s Brooke Obie for Dolemite Is My Name press, Snipes was asked about the project and his feelings surrounding it.

“I’m not associated with it, you know. I’m have nothing to do with it at all,” said Snipes.

On his specific feelings toward the sequel, he said, “I think some things should be left alone…if it worked at the time under the circumstances. And the story was built around things that are current. I don’t particularly like the idea of recreating the drug culture. For what? […] I don’t know. They actually talked to me about doing it and I told them no. If I had a dime for every time I’ve said no. It’s a done deal, it’s a wrap.”
