It’s official, Teyonah Parris has officially closed a deal to join Barry Jenkins’ film adaptation of James Baldwin’s If Beale Street Could Talk, according to Deadline.
She joins Stephan James as Fonny and newcomer Kiki Layne as Tish.
Parris currently stars in the Starz comedy, Survivor’s Remorse.
Baldwin’s novel revolves around a pregnant 19-year-old Harlem woman, named Tish, and her 22-year-old fiance, Fonny. After he is falsely accused of raping another woman, she, her family and their lawyer work to prove his innocence.
Earlier this week, we brought you a report from Jeff Sneider at The Tracking Board, the actress, also known for her work in the films Dear White People and Chiraq, and as the first major black character in the television series Mad Men, is in talks to portray Tish’s older sister Ernestine, who helps fight the accusations against Fonny.
Parris will also appear as a recurring cast member on Season 4 of Empire.
She will play Pamela Rose, “a New York police detective investigating the attempted murder of Lucious.Rose is a beguiling, sensual beauty who is quick to blur the line between personal and professional upon her first encounter with one of the Lyons.” Parris joins fellow recurring cast members Demi Moore, Rumer Willis and Forest Whitaker.
