Lifetime is no stranger to musical biopics. The television channel has curated movies centered around musical legends such as Aaliyah, Whitney Houston and Toni Braxton. It recently unveiled its slate of upcoming projects, including a biopic on gospel superstars The Clark Sisters. Another is a scripted miniseries centered around another legendary musical act: Salt-N-Pepa.

Aptly titled Salt-N-Pepa, the miniseries will chronicle the backstory of one of hip-hop’s most groundbreaking groups. The show will focus on the lives of Cheryl “Salt” James and Sandra “Pepa” Denton from their humble beginnings as nursing students to their entrance into the world of rap and hip-hop after recording a friend’s school project. The series will feature some of Salt-N-Pepa’s biggest hits, such as “Let’s Talk About Sex,” “Push It,” “What a Man” and “Shoop.” Although not directly stated in the press announcement, you should also expect the inclusion of Deidra “DJ Spinderella” Roper, the group’s third member.

Salt-N-Pepa will be executive produced by Shakim Conpere and Queen Latifah, another groundbreaking woman in hip-hop, through Flavor Unit. The miniseries will be written by Abdul Williams and co-executive produced by Andy Humme, Dionne Harmon and James “Jimmy” Maynes. No release date has been announced as of yet for the miniseries.

Salt-N-Pepa made history as the first female rap act to be certified platinum with their 1986 album Hot, Cool & Vicious. Their 1993 album, Very Necessary, is the biggest-selling album by a female rap act. With over 15 million copies sold worldwide, their groundbreaking success as femcees in the world of hip-hop have paved the way for other successful women such as Da Brat, Lil’ Kim, Foxy Brown, Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, Lauryn Hill and Missy Elliott.
