The Cosby Show actor Geoffrey Owens had a triumphant return to Hollywood by being part of the Sunday’s SAG Awards’ traditional “I Am an Actor” opening skit.

For his part of the skit, which you can see below, Owens talks about how his career hit a snag when he was hit by “unemployment and debt.”

“Instead of switching careers like a sane person, I took a job at a local Trader Joe’s to see if I could hang in there with my career and it’s actually worked out pretty well.”

Owens was initially put on blast for working at Trader Joe’s by a woman who took photos of Owens at his place of work and posted them to the internet. What was initially an attempt to shame Owens became a rallying cry of solidarity for many online, particularly other actors who wrote about their own hard times and how it led to them taking everyday jobs to support their career.

In September 2018, the woman, ironically named Karma Lawrence, told that she regretted taking the picture and apologized, saying she didn’t mean anything “malicious” and that she doesn’t shame him for working a “normal” job.

“I don’t know why I snuck a picture,” she said. “I figured everybody does it. I don’t know what possessed me. I just did it. I didn’t even think about it. I just kind of did it on impulse and it was a bad impulse.”

“I actually wanted to go up to him and say something, but I thought, you might embarrass him,” she said. “But then I did something that actually embarrassed him more. I didn’t go with my first instinct, and I should’ve.”

Lawrence’s bad instinct has been converted into a blessing. The pictures caused Owens to have to leave his job, but opportunities quickly opened up. Tyler Perry, who caught wind of the situation with Owens, offered him a guest starring role on The Haves and Have Nots. He has also been offered a guest starring role on NCIS: New Orleans.
