This Saturday September 29th, the Houston, TX based African diaspora art organization Our Image Film & Arts, who we've written about on Shadow And Act in the past presents the newest screening in their ongoing commitment to advancing Black film and art about and by underrepresented racial and ethnic groups by presenting non-stereotypical, honest, cutting-edge, thought-provoking depictions of Black communities and other ethnic communities.
The documentary film The Warm Heart of Africa takes you on a journey to Malawi and discusses the blunt and harsh reality of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in one of the world's poorest countries – an eye-opening and mesmerizing journey into a very real world that is barely acknowledged. Directed by Mustafa Davis, a well-known American photographer and filmmaker whose work is primarily based around issues in the Muslim community, Warm Heart was put together by an amazing and talented production team consisting of Golden Globe and Oscar nominees as well as an Official Academy Award judge.
Davis began his filmmaking career studying with acclaimed German documentary filmmaker Stefan Tolz on his film "Adobe Towns – Shibam, Manhattan of the Desert." He also studied with renowned German cinematographer Sorin Dragoi (Winner of the 2004 German Cinematography Award) and devleoped his passion for storytelling. After nearly seven years of travel (writing and making films) through Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, Mustafa returned to California and attended New York Film Academy at Universal Studios Hollywood. Shortly after graduating he made several films and television programs and relocated to the UAE where he held the position of Executive Producer of Tabah Films & Media Division Director of Tabah Foundation and produced numerous documentaries and television programs that aired on international satellite channels such as Dream, Rotaana, Ar-Risaala, MBC, Abu Dhabi TV, IQRA, Channel 1 Yemen TV, and others. Mustafa has since relocated to Hollywood, CA where he founded the production company CINEMOTION MEDIA. He is currently in production on several feature documentaries, short films and music videos.
The screening, done in conjunction with the Risala Foundation, will be followed by a discussion with Mustafa Davis himself. To see even more about him visit www.mustafadavis.com
