The seemingly always busy and active Idris Elba will topline a new 2-part documentary that will see him travel the world looking at the history of motorcar racing.

Currently titled Idris Elba: King Of Speed, the BBC2 doc series will highlight the colorful political, social and historical evolution of racing, from prohibition to the present. 

Southan Morris is producing and directing. 

Shooting is currently underway, but no specified airdate yet.

It won’t be the first time that Idris has fronted a documentary series for British TV.

There was Channel 4’s 2011 doc series How Hip Hop Changed The World, which was followed by the 2-hour doc, How Clubbing Changed the World, last year, 2012 – both toplined by Elba.

Coming up for Mr Elba, he stars as Nelson Mandela in the upcoming Long Walk To Freedom, just booked a lead role in Cary Fukunaga’s film adaptation of Nigeria author Uzodinma Iweala’s bestselling debut novel Beasts of No Nation, co-stars with Sean Penn and Javier Bardem in director Pierre Morel’s action thriller The Gunman, which is based on the novel, The Prone Gunman, by Jean-Patrick Manchette, co-stars in British playwright Debbie Tucker Green’s upcoming drama Second Coming, and will produce a new UK feature titled One Square Mile, which will be directed by Michael Caton-Jones (The Jackal, Rob Roy).

He also returns in the upcoming sequel to Thor, and season 3 of his acclaimed TV drama series Luther, debuts in the USA this fall.

Like I said, he’s busy.
