Well… maybe this is one project we can scratch off the list of 30+ projects listed on Will Smith’s IMDBPro page of upcoming projects.

You may all recall that, director Francis Lawrence announced in 2009 that a prequel to I Am Legend was a in the works, with Will Smith reprising his role as Robert Neville. He told Syfy then, “Yeah, if we figure out the story, I’m absolutely involved in the prequel… We’ve had conversations. The three of us, Will and Akiva and I, have sat down and talked, and there’s a writer that’s working on it right now. So we came up with the bones of a story, and now we’re waiting to see a script.

As for plot details on the possible prequel, Lawrence later added that the film will center on what happened to Neville before the vicious man-made virus took over New York.

Released in December 2007, the first Will Smith film grossed almost $600 million worldwide, so, it wasn’t any surprise when word of a sequel/prequel was announced.

Fast-forward to today, and Lawrence, talking to MTV, says he doesn’t think the project “is ever going to happen.
