Actor Lyriq Bent, shared the above on-set photo on Twitter, with the caption…

Coming soon…”A Day Late And Dollar Short” with kool peeps like Mekhi Phifer and the beautiful @TichinaArnold

He’s referring to the Lifetime film adaptation of Terry McMillan’s A Day Late and a Dollar Short, based on her New York Times bestseller.

Whoopi Goldberg stars in the film, and is joined by Kimberly Elise and Ving Rhames.

There doesn’t seem to have been a formal announcement that the trio in the above photo had been cast in the film (unless we just missed it), but it looks like they’re in it. I did find a post on Tichina Arnold’s Facebook page from August, confirming this. In that post, it’s also revealed that Anika Noni Rose is in the film’s cast as well.

There isn’t an IMDB page for the project yet, which is odd, and it doesn’t show up on any of the above actors’ IMDB pages – not even on Whoopi’s, even though she’s the star. But we’ll take these social media reveals as indications that they’re all involved – although, I can’t say what roles each is playing – except for Rhames, who we already know will play Whoopi’s husband in a story that follows the irascible matriarch Viola Price (Goldberg) who learns that her next asthma attack will likely kill her, and thus sets out to fix her broken family before she moves on to the next life.

Here’s an official synopsis of the novel:

In this quest she has to contend with sibling rivalry, teen pregnancy and prescription drug addiction – and that’s just one of her four kids. There’s also a jailbird son to teach how to be a better father, a granddaughter in bigger trouble than her mother is willing to admit and an estranged husband to rescue from his scheming young girlfriend.  It’s the kind of meddling that the Price family hasn’t experienced from Viola in decades, and she won’t have an easy time bending her loved ones to her will.

Might Bent, Elise, Rose, Arnold and Phifer all be filling in some or all of the roles mentioned in that synopsis, from Goldberg’s 4 kids to her estranged husband’s scheming young girlfriend? The age difference between Goldberg and those 5 actors isn’t so large that she could play their mother, although this is a film adaptation, so anything’s possible. I guess as long as each of them looks the part, however old they are in real life doesn’t matter. Although one of the women is likely playing Rhames’ younger girlfriend.

The project reunites Goldberg with McMillan, having co-starred opposite Angela Basset in the film adaptation of McMillan’s novel How Stella Got Her Groove Back

In addition to starring in the film, Goldberg is also executive producing.

A Day Late And A Dollar Short is set for a 2014 premiere, after shooting in Toronto.

Produced by Ostar Productions, the film will be directed by Stephen Tolkin (Brothers & Sisters), from a script by Shernold Edwards (Haven).
