Castlevania is a movie that Marina (Sirtis) got me involved with. It’s based on a video game. People have been trying to get this thing done for a long time and they finally got the producers together that want to do it. They finally got the OK from the owners, and so they’re doing it. It’s a fun little part. It’s four days, and I’m playing a werewolf that’s been around for a gajillion years who works for this vampire. It’s not too far from Worf because there’s a lot of killing and jumping and sword fights and everything.

Words from Michael Dorn (who's gotten lots of ink – or pixels – on this site in the last 9 months) in response to a question in an interview with StarTrek.com about his current/upcoming projects.

So in addition to the Lt Commander Worf project he's been shopping around, and recently said he's gotten some interest in, as well as the feature film – Through The Fire – which Anne Marie Johnson has signed up to co-star in, Dorn is apparently also involved in a feature film adaptation of Castlevania, the video game that debuted in 1986, and that centered on vampires and the undead – specifically Simon Belmont in the year 1691, who's on a quest to defeat Dracula.

Checking on IMDBPro, there is a Castlevania project listed, with a 2014 release date, via Crystal Sky Pictures – the same production company that's long been behind the project (since 2005 or thereabouts).

A summary of events…

Crystal Sky Pictures acquired the rights to adapt the video game series, with Paul W.S. Anderson (the Resident Evil franchise) attached to write and direct the film adaptation, promsing a "very lush, Romantic, Gothic look" to it.

Dimension was to distribute the film, but later backed out because of creative differences, and Rogue Pictures stepped in.

Locations had already been scouted, principal photography was slated to begin in spring 2007, but was postponed because, and later that year, Sylvain White took over for Anderson a director, who said he was attracted to the project for "the chance to make a dark, epic period movie that almost has an anime feel to it."

Production was then slated to begin in late fall 2007, for a 2008 release.

Production was halted again because of the 2007 Writers Guild of America strike (the script wasn't done at the time), and they pushed the start date to sprind 2008.

Rogue Pictures was sold to Relativity Media, and the project was eventually shelved in early 2009.

However, that summer (2009) it was reported that Saw co-creator James Wan, had been signed to rewrite the script, and direct; although it was also reported that Paul W. S. Anderson was still interested in the project as well.

There was a drought, until this interview with Michael Dorn, confirming that the project isn't dead, and he's involved. and shooting is moving forward apparently.

Is this the same Crystal Pictures project that's been in development since 2005, or something entirely new and different?

That unfortunately isn't clear. Although I'd assume Crystal still owns the film rights, so it could be the same project.

But now that the news is out in the open, I'm sure we'll get some official confirmation or negation soon enough.

Anyone remember playing Castlevania? I recall playing it in the 1980s. I'm sure the game has evolved since then.
