Today in history, May 2nd, 1994Nelson Mandela and the African National Congress claim victory in South Africa’s first multi-racial election. Mandela, who spent nearly 30 years in prison under Apartheid rule, became the country’s president – a position he held for 5 years, until June 1999.

Quite a lengthy and involved life for Mr Mandela, who will be 93 years old this year.
