September 30, 2016 seems like it’s still so long away; yet it’s really not, with August now well underway. September 30 is when “Marvel’s Luke Cage” series premieres on Netflix – a weekend that I’m sure will see many of us locked inside our various homes, binge-watching what we hope will be an excellent much-anticipated series.

Showrunner and executive producer Cheo Hodari Coker has said this about the series: “It’s very sophisticated. I mean, it’s got a ’90s hip-hop vibe, but it’s really forward-thinking. We have Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad doing the scoring for us… We have a lot of different musical appearances, but at the same time, we’ve got the Marvel action. We’ve got drama. I would like this to be, I mean, I know this is heavy but, ‘The Wire’ of Marvel television, because we really deal with a lot of different issues.”

Any comparisons to “The Wire” whatsoever will likely excite many, given how loved that critically-acclaimed HBO series was, and still is. I assume Coker is suggesting that we should expect a series that will acutely explore social and political issues, in a realistic manner, but set in a superhero universe.

Star Mike Colter adds: “I just feel that moral ambiguity is something that everyone has inside of them and you just have to embrace it. So all the characters I play, I don’t look at them as good or bad. They’re just complex people and sometimes they do things that suit them and sometimes they do things that suit others… It’s set in Harlem, modern-day Harlem which is so unique… I don’t know if there’s a lot of people that have been to Harlem, who’ve actually stepped foot in New York City and gone uptown to 125th Street and seen what the Apollo Theater is like and the Cotton Club. We’re going to bring that world to them, and that is a unique character unto itself.”

Co-star Simone Missick chimes in: “[Misty Knight] is so larger than life, and being able to put the voice to it for the first time is exciting… and then the writing was so rich. It was like, every day that you open the script, you’re like, ‘I really get to say this today? I get to do this today? I get to kick ass today?’ So it was a lot of fun.”

Colter seals the deal, maybe speaking to (or teasing) fans of the comic book specifically when he said: “We’re going to make sure everybody’s happy, but don’t expect a yellow shirt every day. Let’s put it that way… We brought it to mustard. We started there. We knocked it down a bit. Not so bright.”

Needless to say, I’m looking forward to seeing what’s been done with the character in his very own live-action series. September 30th can’t come soon enough!

Mike Colter plays Luke Cage, in the series. Mahershala Ali is Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes, an adversary for the title character to battle against. Simone Missick is a variation of Misty Knight. Alfre Woodard plays a variation of another Luke Cage nemesis known as Black Mariah. And Theo Rossi is Shades (aka Alvarez), a career criminal and a nemesis to Cage.
