It feels like it’s been a little while since the name Omar Sy was last mentioned in a post on this blog. There was a period, although not-so-long ago, when it felt like a week didn’t go by without an Omar Sy post, given the number of projects he became attached to, after his star-making turn in last year’s global blockbuster, the French dramedy Intoucables (The Intouchables).

In addition to playing Bishop in X-men: Days Of Future Past, other project’s he’ll be appearing in include: an action-thriller from Stephen Gaghan (Traffic, Syriana), titled The Candy Store; Michel Gondry’s Mood Indigo; co-starring with Bradley Cooper in a culinary dramedy titled Chef; and a French-Language film titled Chocolat, which is a biopic of Rafael Padilla – a former Cuban-born slave, who became the first black artist in France during the Belle Epoque era.

Those are just some of what’s on the horizon for Monsieur Sy.

We can also now add this newly-announced project to his upcoming slate.

Sy is teaming up again with his Intouchables directors – Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano – on their next film, another dramedy, this one titled Samba, which Sy will of course star in, alongside, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Tahar Rahim and Izya Higelin.

Plot details on the Gaumont/Quad/Ten co-production are currently being kept under-wraps, with shooting scheduled to start at the end of October, for a 2014 release.

All Gaumont would say is that it’s “a social comedy – playful, universal and very moving.” 

Sounds like Intouchables… and countless other films.
