A film we’ve talked about ad naseam on Shadow And Act, especially on the old site. We’ve been following the film, almost as long as the site has been around – roughly 2 years… and counting.

So I assume most of you are well aware of it by now.

But as a recap, Pariah is Dee Rees’ feature directorial debut; based on an award-winning short film of the same name, the film centers on a Bronx teen forced to choose between losing her best friend or destroying her family, as she juggles conflicting identities and endures heartbreak, all in a desperate search for sexual expression.

The film stars Adepero Oduye, Pernell Walker, Kim Wayans in a rare dramatic role, Charles Parnell, and Aasha Davis.

It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, which is where I saw it, and later reviewed it. You can read my thoughts HERE. In short, I dug it! 🙂

Focus Features quickly acquired the film for distribution, though no release date has been penciled in yet. I’m expecting a fall/early winter opening.

It feels like it’s been awhile since we last wrote about the film, though it’s played at one or two other festivals since its Sundance debut. And until now, marketing materials (posters, trailers, etc) for it have come primarily from the Pariah team.

What we have in the image above and the video below are the first official poster and trailer from Focus Features. And with these new media releases, I’m guessing this means we should expect an announcement of an official theatrical release date soon, so stay tuned!
