nullS&A readers looking for a worthy film project to support can look no further than Deluge, the forthcoming short drama by filmmaker and S&A contributor Nijla Mumin.

Below, see the trailer for the project's campaign, followed by a message from Nijla:

.

Dear Shadow & Act Community,

My name is Nijla and I'm a writer/filmmaker from the SF Bay Area, currently based in Los Angeles.  I'm pursuing a dual MFA Degree in Writing and Film Directing at Calarts. I’m currently in pre-production on my graduate thesis film, Deluge, which we are aiming to shoot in New Orleans in September 2012.  My team and I have just launched an Indiegogo campaign to raise $25,000 within the next 46 days, for the film. Thus far, we have amassed a great team with Charles Burnett (Killer of Sheep, To Sleep With Anger) as our Faculty Advisor on the project.

The only way the film can be completed is through community contributions. Any contribution will get us closer to production in New Orleans. We have awesome rewards for contributors!

Please check out the campaign to learn more about the project: http://www.indiegogo.com/Deluge?a=539176.

Deluge is a short film that explores African American’s relationships to water, informed by such traumas as The Middle Passage, the BP Oil spill, and Hurricane Katrina, through the lens of main character Tiana, and her introduction to an aquatic underworld of black mermaids. This film is inspired by the 2010 mass drowning of six black teens in a Shreveport, Louisiana sinkhole. None of them could swim. The film blends coming of age drama, magical realism, and psychological suspense to explore traumatic memory in a post- BP oil spill New Orleans.
