Spike TV is teaming up with screenwriter Kurt Wimmer ( "Law Abiding Citizen," "Salt," and the upcoming "Point Break") to develop a new dramatic TV series titled "When The Levee Breaks," which will reflect "a number of hot-button issues that are culturally relevant today, including race and law enforcement," says the press release.

"When The Levee Breaks" follows events that take place when an illegal strike by the LAPD threatens chaos in Los Angeles. An African American cop, said to be the series’ central character, investigates the murders of two racist cops whose deaths provoked the illegal LAPD strike – and whose murders he himself may be linked to.

"We are thrilled to partner with such an incredibly innovative and creative film visionary such as Kurt Wimmer," said Sharon Levy, Executive Vice President, Original Series, Spike TV. "Kurt is the perfect example of the big and bold voices with an edge that we are looking for to further our mission to create distinctive original programming."

Levy, Ted Gold, Senior Vice President, Scripted Original Series, and Justin Lacob, Vice President, Original Series, will oversee the project.

Spike TV will premiere its first scripted event series in 8 years, "Tut," on July 19. It will tell the story of the Egyptian Pharaoh in what the network calls an ambitious special-event series, which will follow Tut’s rise to power and his struggle to lead Egypt to glory, while his closest advisers, friends and lovers scheme for their own nefarious interests. Of note, with respect to this blog’s interests… British actor Nonso Anozie will play the savvy military, yet power hungry, strategist General Horemheb. Also Canadian-born actress Kylie Bunbury portrays Suhad, the beautiful and endearing girl of Mitanni descent who develops a strong bond with the young Egyptian king, despite the fact she is not of royal bloodlines.

The event series will air over 3 nights – July 19 to July 21 – on Spike.
