Time flies… the MoMA Euzhan Palcy retrospective I first told you about in March (though it feels like it was just yesterday) is here! In fact, it starts today/tonight, with a screening of her most recognized and prized work, Sugar Cane Alley (Rue Cases-Nègres, at 7PM.

However, she has a full body of work (going back to 1983) that most of us on this side of the pond likely aren’t at all familiar with, and much of that work will be screened during this celebration of the filmmaker’s oeuvre, in what will be the first USA retrospective of Palcy’s work ever, which will run from May 18 – 30.

Over the last 25 years, Palcy has produced and directed over 15 narrative and documentary films, featuring performances by such actors as Marlon Brando, Susan Sarandon, Donald Sutherland, and Alan Alda, exploring themes of race, gender, and politics from a decidedly feminist perspective.

Filmmaker in Focus: Euzhan Palcy, as the series is titled, follows Palcy’s special tribute at the ongoing 64th Cannes Film Festival, which MsWOO was present for. In fact, she interviewed Palcy – an interview that will be posted here soon.

And, by the way, Miss Palcy herself will be present to introduce some of the MoMA screenings.

Born in Martinique, in 1958, Euzhan Palcy was the first black woman director to have her work produced by a major Hollywood studio (MGM’s A Dry White Season).
