Netflix has just released new first-look images from Season 4 of Stranger Things and it looks like this next installment will be just as mysterious and gripping as past seasons.

It won’t be long before we get to see Hawkins’ finest return to the Upside Down in a brand new season, which is set to premiere this summer.

The fourth and penultimate season of Stranger Things will follow the Hawkins kids six months after the Battle at Starcourt, which not only caused mass destruction but provoked fear within the fictional Indiana town.

All of our favorite Stranger Things characters are back for season 4, including Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard), Lucas Sinclair (Caleb McLaughlin), Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo), Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder), Jim Hopper (David Harbour), Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dryer), Jonathan Byers (Charlie Heaton), Max (Sadie Sink), Steve Harrington (Joe Keery), Robin Buckley (Maya Hawke, and Eric Sinclair (Priah Ferguson).

Season 4 will also include newcomers:

Jamie Campbell Bower (Peter Ballard), Joseph Quinn (Eddie Munson), Eduardo Franco (Argyle), Sherman Augustus (Lt. Colonel Sullivan), Mason Dye (Jason Carver), Nikola Djuricko (Yuri), Tom Wlaschiha (Dmitri), Myles Truitt (Patrick), Regina Ting Chen (Ms. Kelly), Grace Van Dien (Chrissy), Logan Riley Bruner (Fred Benson), Logan Allen (Jake), Elodie Grace Orkin (Angela), John Reynolds (Officer Callahan), Rob Morgan (Chief Powell), Amybeth McNulty (Vickie) and Robert Englund (Victor Creel).

Here's the official description for Season 4:

Struggling with the aftermath, our group of friends are separated for the first time – and navigating the complexities of high school hasn’t made things any easier. In this most vulnerable time, a new and horrifying supernatural threat surfaces, presenting a gruesome mystery that, if solved, might finally put an end to the horrors of the Upside Down.

As the series creators The Duffer Brothers previously revealed, “Season 4 will find our favorite characters scattered throughout four different four different — but equally creepy — locations around the world, from snowy Russia to sunny California. Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), Mike (Finn Wolfhard) and the rest of the crew will have to work together to defeat an even more vicious supernatural force and put a stop to the Upside Down once and for all.”

Stranger Things Season 4 will be broken up into two parts. Volume 1 makes its debut on May 27, with Volume 2 premiering on July 1.

The Duffer Brothers say fans have a lot to look forward to in Season 4

According to Netflix Tudum, the Duffer brothers hint that fans have much to look forward to when Stranger Things makes its returns in this upcoming May.

“I think they’ll be happy when they see it. It’s very, very long, which is why it’s taking us a very long time,” Ross Duffer shared. “I’m constantly impressed with how sharp the fans are, and how quickly they’re able to put something together with very, very little information.”

According to the famous brothers, the new season is much darker and gives off more of a “horror movie” vibe.

“When we pitched it to Netflix all those years ago, we pitched it as the kids are…The Goonies in E.T.,” Ross explained. “That’s their storyline. And the adults are in Jaws and Close Encounters and then the teens are in Nightmare on Elm Street or Halloween. But, this year, we don’t have the kids. We can’t do The Goonies anymore. And so, suddenly, we’re leaning much harder into that horror movie territory that we love. It was fun to make that change.”
