Here's another look at the "Southern Apocalpytic Kids Adventure Comedy," as it's described, titled Beasts of the Southern Wild, directed by Benh Zeitlin, from a screenplay co-written by Lucy Alibar, based on her original play titled Juicy And Delicious (I love both titles).

Its synopsis reads:

Hushpuppy, an intrepid six-year-old girl, lives with her father, Wink, in “the Bathtub,” a southern Delta community at the edge of the world. Wink’s tough love prepares her for the unraveling of the universe; for a time when he’s no longer there to protect her. When Wink contracts a mysterious illness, nature flies out of whack—temperatures rise, and the ice caps melt, unleashing an army of prehistoric creatures called aurochs. With the waters rising, the aurochs coming, and Wink’s health fading, Hushpuppy goes in search of her lost mother. Hushpuppy is not just the film’s heroine; she’s its soul. Beasts of the Southern Wild exists entirely in its own universe: mythological, anthropological, folkloric, and apocalyptic. Benh Zeitlin’s first feature (a Sundance Institute Feature Film Program project) employs a cast of nonactors—reflecting its grassroots production—to fiercely portray the bond between father and daughter in a world where only the strong survive. Standing defiantly at the end of the world, Hushpuppy affirms the dignity of telling their own story: that they were once there.

From all I've heard through the grapevine, this is one film in this year's competition thatt really stands out, and I'm looking forward to seeing it at the festival, which starts this Thursday.

I should add that the director, Zeitlin also has a background in animation, so we might see some of that in this – a combo liveaction and animation, drama/fantasy/adventure.

The film stars Quvenzhané Wallis (in the photo above – a name I couldn't find a single thing on, given that she's a "nonactor" as the above synopsis states), although I suspect we'll be hearing her name a lot more from here on) and Dwight Henry as Wink (also in the above photo).

Beasts of the Southern Wild was a 2009 June Screenwriters and Directors Lab participant, as well as a 2010 Sundance / NHK International Filmmakers Award winner. 

Still very little media on it; all stills, and the photo at the top of this post is the latest to be released. And in the video below, director Zeitlin talks about the project in Sundance's "meet the artists" 2012 feature.
