The natural hair movement is not just the black-and-white “relaxed vs. natural” conversation, but there are intra-conflicts within the community itself: loose curls vs. tight curls. Recently acquired by Gravitas Ventures, Hair That Moves is a South African short film about a young black girl who attends a suburban private school, which leads to her fascination with coveting wavy locks over her short “stubborn” afro.

Hair That Moves was produced in conjunction with Focus Features, a division of NBCUniversal and the National Film and Video Foundation. The short was the official selection of the San Antonio International Film Festival, The FiSahara Film Festival and the 20th anniversary of the Zanzibar International Film Festival.

“It’s exciting to be on Amazon Prime. Short films sometimes just kind of disappear once they are done on the festival circuit so this is a really a great opportunity.” said the film’s writer and director, Yolanda Keabetswe Mogatusi.
