There are two avenues that could use more black narratives and they are: depression awareness and the sci-fi genre. Award-winning filmmaker Bryan Christian steps up with his new sci-fi short film project, Homeboy, which chronicles a young man who desires world travel, but finds himself stuck in a space look within his own home. Christian is also the founder of Bruecool Productions, where he writes and produces short films as well as provide much-needed video services.

Hailing from the Bronx, Christian’s Homeboy was an official finalist of the 2014 World Series of Screenwriting contest.

“I want to make this film to tackle mental illness that plagues communities of color preventing many to reach their full potential. I think the sci-fi genre is a good way to tell thought-provoking stories that challenge the status quo and give people a different perspective of topics we normally do not talk about,” said Christian.

As someone who has personally suffered from depression, Christian added, “I wrote “Homeboy” to channel my personal struggle with depression into a meaningful work of art to show people that you should not let any mental illness stop you from pursuing your dreams and going outside your comfort zone can help you change and grow into a better person.”
