1. Lionheart

Genevieve Nnaji’s 2018 comedy stars Nnaji as a woman who steps up to run her father’s company. Her move to keep her family’s business open becomes even more troublesome since she’s in a male-dominated industry. The film also stars Nkem Owoh, Pete Edochie, Onyeka Onwenu and Kalu Ikeagwu.

2. What Happened, Miss Simone?

Liz Garbus’ 2015 documentary about the legendary Nina Simone takes a look at the singer’s life, including her work as a civil rights activist. The documentary features archive footage of Simone as well as an interview with her daughter, Lisa Simone Kelly. Other interviews for the documentary include notables in Simone’s life including Roger Nupie, Al Schackman, George Wein, Stanley Crouch, Dick Gregory, Ilyasah Shabazz, Attallah Shabazz and Gerrit De Bruin.

3. First Match

Elvire Emanuelle stars in 2018 drama First Match as a Brooklyn girl who has lived through the foster care system. She comes to believe that the only way back to her estranged father is to join the boys wrestling team. The film also stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Colman Domingo, and Jharrel Jerome.

4. Daughters of the Dust

Julie Dash’s historic film is finally on Netflix, giving people a new chance to watch the film. The film looks at generations of Gullah women in the early 20th century. The film stars Cora Lee Day, Alva Rogers, Barbara O. Jones, Trula Hoosier, Umar Abdurrahman, Adisa Anderson, Kaycee Moore, Bahni Turpin, Cheryl Lynn Bruce, Cornell Royal and Tommy Redmond Hicks.

5. The Trap

T.I. stars in this 2019 comedy as a man who returns home to Atlanta to try to help his family’s struggling restaurant. The key to his plan: his new chicken recipe. The film also stars Mike Epps, Loretta Devine, Queen Latifah, Teyana Taylor and Meagan Tandy.

6. Honeytrap

This 2014 British drama stars Jessica Sula as a young girl who is desperate to fit in to her new London scene. But instead of finding her way in a new city, she becomes ensnared in the world of gang violence. The film also stars Lucien Laviscount and Ntonga Mwanza.
