The Brazilian heist comedy “Jules and Dolores” (original title “O Roubo da Taça”) – a SXSW Film Festival Audience Award winner – follows the thieves behind the 1983 theft of the legendary Jules Rimet trophy in Rio de Janeiro, which was given to the country for winning The World Cup.

In an attempt to pay off his gambling debt and pacify his flamboyant girlfriend Dolores, fun-loving Peralta and his happy-go-lucky buddy Borracha decide to steal a golden replica of the legendary Jules Rimet soccer World Cup trophy. What they don’t realize is that what they stole is the actual trophy, and not a replica, putting the entire country on the alert.

The film stars Paulo Tiefenthaler, Taís Araújo, Danilo Grangheia, Milhem Cortaz, and Fabio Marcoff. Araújo (image above from the movie) – who’s also been called the Brazilian Halle Berry – will likely be the most famous cast member to Stateside audiences. We’ve covered some of her work, as well as her husband’s Lázaro Ramos, who’s been called Brazil’s Denzel Washington (although he’s not in this film).

Directed by Caito Ortiz, I just learned that “Jules and Dolores” has premiered on Netflix USA via Picture Tree for international distribution. So if you’re looking for something new to watch over the weekend, add this one to your queue.
