National Geographic Content welcomes Karen Greenfield to the newly-created position of Senior Vice President of Content, Diversity & Inclusion. The announcement was made Thursday by National Geographic Content President Courteney Monroe.

Greenfield will lead the Nat Geo Content creative teams “to develop and produce inclusive storytelling for a multicultural and multigenerational audience.” She will also “collaborate closely with marketing and communications leaders to create a broader array of fans.” Greenfiled will report to Monroe.

Furthermore, Greenfield’s role will include her developing and implementing programs and initiatives to produce inclusive, diverse content across Nat Geo and will help cultivate “a culture of belongong across all Nat Geo Content teams.” She will also work with The Walt Disney Company to make sure Nat Geo programming and talent are integrated into Disney’s DEI initiatives. Greenfield will also focus on “building cultural competency” acorss creative teams and provide advice “to ensure cultural authenticity.”

Monroe said that Greenfield is “exceptional” in her field and will utilize her experience to help push Nat Geo forward.

“For 134 years, National Geographic has used the power of storytelling to change the world. An essential component of that is ensuring that everyone’s voice is included,” said Monroe in a statement. “Karen is an exceptional executive with a proven track record leading diversity and inclusion initiatives and working with the world’s leading content creators. I am thrilled that Karen will be leveraging her extraordinary talents and passion to help guide us in our mission to inspire and elevate diversity and inclusion in every aspect of our work and storytelling, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.”

Greenfield also spreahead the Nat Geo Media Scholarship program for students from HBCUs. Four recipients from the inaugural year of the program earned a $10,000 scholarship and an opportunity to take part in a two-week immersion program at the National Geographic headquarterships and mentorship with an employee. Greenfield said in a statement how excited she was to keep the project going.
