ABC has approved a pilot commitment for Rosewood writer-producer Nkechi Carroll, according to Deadline. Carroll will write the untitled drama, which will focus on, according to the article, “a criminal justice system run entirely by women of color.”

The protagonist of the show is a character named Chelsea Barnum, a woman looking for a second chance and takes a job as the police chief in Sutter, North Carolina. She soon realizes women of color run the town’s judicial system. This is something similar to what we’ve seen in the recent local elections, such as in Jefferson County, AL, where a historic number of nine black female judges were elected. The pilot also comes at a time when record numbers of women, including women of color, are running for positions in all levels of government, including Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams.

“What started out as a second chance at a career ends up becoming a second chance at life,” wrote Deadline, “as together these women revolutionize crime and punishment while restoring hope, community and humanity to a town that desperately needs it.”

Carroll will executive produce alongside Elizabeth Banks and Max Handelman of Brownstone Productions and Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter of Berlanti Productions.
