Justin A. Reynolds’ young adult novel Opposite of Always will get the feature film adaptation by Paramount Players.

According to Deadline, the film will focus on a young Black man named Jack who meets Kate, a young Black woman he ends up falling in love with at a party. Their relationship grows until Kate dies from a genetic condition. But her death sends Jack back to the day he met Kate, leading him on a path of time travel that could allow him to prevent her death.

But with time travel comes problems, and soon he’s faced with a predicament after a choice ends up with deadly consequences for one of his loved ones. He then has to figure out how much he’s willing to put on the line.

The film will be produced by Marty Bowen, John Fischer and Isaac Klausner of Temple Hill.

Opposite of Always, Reynolds’ debut book, was published March 5. The Hate U Give author Angie Thomas called it “[o]ne of the best love stories I’ve ever read.” Kirkus Reviews wrote the book was a “wonderfully romantic story of teenage love and second chances” that “tackles complex subjects in an uncompromising way.”
