Warner Bros. has released a slew of photos from Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming Dune film. The photos first appeared on Vanity Fair.

The film stars Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Zendaya, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Dave Bautista, David Dastmalchian Stephen McKinley Henderson, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa and Javier Bardem.

The new film is a reboot of the 1984 film, which is based on the 1965 novel by Frank Herbert. For those unfamiliar, here’s the story: Dune is a space-faring adventure story that is rich with political intrigue and complex machinations. The story follows Chalamet’s Paul Atreides, the heir apparent of the Atreides family. When they’re sent to rule over the desert planet Arrakis and its valuable spice commodity, their rule is contested by competing noble families, leading to betrayal and ultimately rebellion. Villenueve confirms that Warner Bros. has agreed to do the film in two parts, similar to It and It: Chapter Two, meaning there will be two movie releases.

Zendaya plays “a mystery woman named Chani, who haunts Paul in his dreams as a vision with glowing blue eyes.”

The film racebends a character from the source material, Liet-Kynes, who is originally a white man and the father of Chani. In the new film, the character is a Black woman, portrayed by Duncan-Brewster. This isn’t the first time the character has been a woman as Liet-Kynes was first not a man in the 2000 Syfy miniseries.

“What Denis had stated to me was there was a lack of female characters in his cast, and he had always been very feminist, pro-women, and wanted to write the role for a woman,” the actress told Vanity Fair. “This human being manages to basically keep the peace amongst many people. Women are very good at that, so why can’t Kynes be a woman? Why shouldn’t Kynes be a woman?”

Dune is set to be released in theaters this December.
