In MTV‘s new series Help! I’m In A Secret Relationship!, hosts Travis Mills and Rahne Jones help uncover secret relationships (and the strange reasons behind them).

Shadow and Act spoke with Mills and Jones to discuss their experience working on a show that brings the truth to light and helps couples finally open up to each other in a healthy and effective way.

“I mean, for me, it was is very fulfilling, in a way,” Jones shared. “Like, you’re going in to help a person who is at their wit’s end, you wouldn’t bring in a TV show with all these cameras into your personal life– first of all, if you weren’t passionate about the person that you’re with, and two, if you literally had no other recourse, right? So to go in and to see these people at their most vulnerable was heartbreaking to see. But to then be able to empower them to speak their mind and to finally let their partner know how this has been making them feel [was great]. We’ve had a lot of people ask questions like, ‘What’s wrong with me?’ ‘Are they embarrassed of me?’ And this is what hiding someone can do- you make them question their self-worth. To leave that situation with couples that have finally gone down the path of communication just really made me feel good that we can come into it with a level of empathy and understanding and hopefully they can kind of go into the world anew.”

Although helping people uncover the truth about their significant others was a highlight of hosting for Jones and Mills, there were some pretty memorable moments in the show that stuck out for the pair.

“We’ve had drinks thrown, we’ve had a failed proposal, we’ve had some blowouts, we’ve had family emergencies, we’ve had COVID scares–you name it we’ve dealt with it,” Mills said. “It was definitely like a wild roller coaster of a season to film. And I think the one thing that I’ll say is I’m just grateful that I get to be the host and not the subject. I think that’s a positive.”

Despite those unfortunate situations, Jones and Mills still enjoyed hosting this docuseries, noting that bringing couples closer together was their favorite part of the show.

“I think for me, it was seeing people’s relationships be repaired and then walking away from this experience in a better, healthier, stronger relationship than when they entered,” Mills said. “And that’s really all you can hope for. And that’s like what we try to do every time. Obviously, it doesn’t always work out that way. But when it does, it’s fulfilling and it’s rewarding. That’s why we do it.”

“And for me, I think it is watching someone find the confidence to seek the answers that they so rightly deserve,” Jones shared. “A lot of times it’s hard to communicate, [and maybe] that’s because we are a social media-heavy, in our phone-type of the generation now. As a person who had difficulty communicating and past experiences, I can definitely relate. But to see these couples, especially the person that’s being hidden, have the confidence to communicate– and then the person who’s doing the hiding, having the bravery to sit in front of cameras and have an honest conversation– I think the level of empowerment that people get from finally being able to speak their truth and how they feel was really rewarding to watch.”
