In 2016, Barry Jenkins’ second full-length feature, Moonlight, was released in theaters to universal acclaim by critics and audiences alike.

The film, written and directed by Jenkins, was based on the play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue by Tarell Alvin McCraney. Now, Netflix users eager to relish in the magic of the film can rejoice.

This week, it was announced that Moonlight will make it’s Netflix debut in America on May 21. The film tells the story of Chiron, a young Black man grappling with his sexual identity while growing up in Miami. Moonlight stars Trevante Rhodes, Mahershala Ali, Janelle Monáe, Ashton Sanders, Andre Holland, Alex Hibbert, Naomie Harris, and Jharrel Jerome. At the 89th Academy Awards in 2017, the film became the first with an all-Black cast and the first LGBTQ film to win The Academy Award for Best Picture. Harris was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Paula, while Ali took home the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Juan. Jenkins is the 2019 recipient of the Game-Changer Award, at Shadow And Act’s RISING Awards ceremony. He also delivered the keynote.
