Broadway juggernaut A Strange Loop is leading the nominees for the 2022 Tony Awards.

The nominees were announced Monday, with A Strange Loop gaining an astounding 11 nominations.

The musical’s creator, Michael R. Jackson, was nominated for Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score. Other nominations include Best Direction of a Musical (Stephen Brackett), Best Lead Actor in a Musical (Jaquel Spivey), Best Featured Actor in a Musical (John-Andrew Morrison), Best Featured Actress in a Musical (L Morgan Lee), Best Scenic Design of a Musical (Arnulfo Maldonado), Best Lighting of a Musical (Jen Schriever), Best Sound Design of a Musical (Drew Levy) and Best Orchestrations (Charlie Rosen).

Following A Strange Loop with 10 nominations is MJ, a musical based on Michael Jackson’s life and featuring Jackson’s music. Paradise Square has also earned 10 nominations, telling the dramatic story of the Draft Riots of 1863 in Manhattan. Rounding out the top is dramatic play The Lehman Trilogy, focusing on the 2008 recession. The Lehman Trilogy earned eight nominations. Clyde’s, from Lynn Nottage, also received several nominations, including for Uzo Aduba, Ron Cephas Jones and Kara Young. Other Black-fronted productions with several nods are Caroline, or Change, Skeleton Crew, Trouble in Mind, for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf and more.

A Strange Loop is described as a “meta musical” according to Variety, telling the story of a gay Black man trying to write a musical about a gay Black man.

According to the musical’s website, A Strange Loop is a “blisteringly funny masterwork [that] exposes the heart and soul of a young artist grappling with desires, identity, and instincts he both loves and loathes.”

The musical has been backed by numerous celebrities including RuPaul, who has advertised the musical on her Instagram as a “BRILLIANT, Black & Queer-Ass American Musical.” Other celebrity backers include Billy Porter, Debra Martin Chase, Don Cheadle, Meena Harris, Jennifer Hudson, and many more.

The nominations ceremony also paid special attention to Black productions in order to address Broadway’s prior lack of addressing Black Lives Matter. Some of the productions highlighted during the ceremony including Skeleton Crew, Trouble in Mind, for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf, and, of course, A Strange Loop.

A Strange Loop has also won numerous awards prior to its Tony nominations. The musical has earned a Pulitzer Prize, with Jackson becoming the first Black writer to win a Pulitzer for writing a musical, along with five Drama Desk Awards, including Best Musical. It has also been named Best Musical by the Off-Broadway Alliance, Lambda Literary and the New York Drama Critics Circle. The musical has also won two Obie Awards.
