From April 19 – 25, New Yorkers will be able to see 3 Artmattan films – Return To Goree, The Story of Lovers Rock and Filling The Gap – at MIST Harlem Cinemas.
In Return to Gorée, filmmaker Pierre-Yves Borgeaud followed Senegalese singer Youssou N’Dour, on tour, with the music created by African slaves and their descendants – the goal being to stage a concert on Gorée, an island just off the coast of Dakar with a museum commemorating victims of the Atlantic slave trade.
In The Story of Lovers Rock, through live performances by and interviews with some of the leading representatives of the musical genre, as well as archival footage, and photographs, the film highlights a style of the late 70s and 80s British music (aka Lover’s Rock, aka “romantic reggae“), and the generation of young black British men and women that fostered its rise.
And finally, Filling The Gap, highlights the contributions people of African descent made to the economic development of the United States, the goal being to educate viewers about the inventive and creative abilities of African-Americans.
