It's not quite there yet, but everyone's favorite rom-com is about $10 milllion shy of the coveted $100 million in box office receipts. As of today, it's raked in $89.7 million ($660,000 this weekend), playing on 509 screens currently.
Will it get to $100 million? It'll be tough this late in the game, but ya never know. There could be sudden surge.
No matter, even if it didn't make another dime, Think Like A Man is undoubtedly 2012's surprise success of the year. It didn't make the gazillions of dollars The Avengers and Hunger Games each made, but I'd say that it's one of the most profitable films of the year, when looking at the budgets for all the top grossing films so far this year. I'm sure Sony/Screen Gems is pleased.
It's certainly one of the highest grossing films ever with a predominatly black starring cast.
I can also verify (via Box Offce Mojo) that the film has opened outside the USA – specifically, in South Africa; it's foreign box office as of today is just over $1 million, bringing its worldwide gross to $90.7 million. No word on what other countries in might have a theatrical run in.
Meanwhile… the Omar Sy starrer, The Intouchables, added 46 more screens this past weekend, bringing its total to 50; it made $350,000 this weekend, bringing its total Stateside gross to $517,000. Although, its foriegn box office sits at almost $350 million, so the cash its earning now here in the USA is really just icing on the cake; plus it introduces Omar Sy to a whole new audience, which might mean even more opportunities for the actor/comedian… more on that later.
I expect The Weinstein Company will expand the film to even more theaters this coming weekend.
