We’ve told you about the gospel documentary Rejoice and Shout in the past but, thanks to our sister blog The Playlist, we’ve nabbed an exclusive clip from the film of Mahalia Jackson performing on the Ed Sullivan Show.

Directed by Don McGlynn, the film traces the evolution of gospel music and covers its many musical styles.

Highlighted forms include the spirituals and early hymns, the four-part harmony-based quartets, the integration of blues and swing into Gospel, the emergence of Soul, and the blending of Rap and Hip Hop elements.

The film also features The Staple Singers, The Five Blind Boys Of Mississippi, Sister Rosetta Tharpe and more.
