Courtesy of our friends at Open Culture… Charles "Skip" Pitts was a blues guitarist, best known for his distinctive "wah-wah" style, prominently featured on Isaac Hayes' title track from Shaft (1971). He is widely considered to have been one of the architects of soul, R&B, and funk guitar, whose work has been sampled by many that came after him, like Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, The Beastie Boys, and Massive Attack.
In 1998, Pitts became a founding member of soul/jazz group The Bo-Keys, and played with them until his death in May of this year, from cancer. He was 65.
