nullSeason 4 of the ITVS Futurestates program is underway with another group of 7 futuristic short films from 7 different filmmakers and their own individual visions of what the America of tomorrow will look like.

As a reminder, the initiative produces a series of short films by up-and-coming filmmakers, commissioned by ITVS that explore “possible future scenarios through the prism of today’s global realities.”

Each episode presents a different vision of American society in the not-too-distant future, by each filmmaker (or as ITVS calls them, “Independent Prognosticators“) – using speculative fiction to explore, on film, social issues.

We’ve been following the series since its first season, featuring some great Futurestates films from filmmakers like Barry Jenkins, A. Sayeeda Clarke, Tina Mabry and others.

This season (season 4), includes a contribution from writer/director Julian Breece – a short titled The Living.

Here’s its synopsis: Organ Harvesting Initiative surgeon Isaac North visits a Colorado refugee town where quadriplegic Luther Hillman has signed up to be euthanized in return for his family’s medical care, his organs harvested for more “productive” citizens.

It stars Brandon Scott, Harmony Santana (her first role since starring in Rashaad Ernesto Green’s Gun Hill Road last year), Sy Richardson, and Lisa Goodman.

Breece’s The Living debut on the 22nd (a new one is released about every week), and is now available to watch online, so check it out below.

This year, all 7 shorts will air on Futurestates.tv, as well as on PBS.org, and PBS TV.
